Meet your representatives
My name is Ilda Nogueira and I am standing for the Board of Trustees for Westburn School. I am the mother of a boy attending Year Two at Westburn School. I have two older daughters - the younger one attending Year 10 at Burnside High School and the oldest one doing First Year at the University of Canterbury. I have a Degree in Economics (ISCED 7) and I have worked for the last 20 years in Accounting. In both overseas and in New Zealand, I worked for an array of small and medium companies, from several areas of businesses and services, working with people from many diverse backgrounds. My family and I are originally from Portugal and moved to Christchurch 6 years ago when my husband, a Geotechnical Engineer, was offered a job in the rebuild. Christchurch is now our home and none of us is planning to move anywhere else anytime soon - we are very aware of how lucky we are to live in this city. Westburn is a very diverse school. There are children from over 30 different countries; many of the parents have been born overseas and are learning about the education system in New Zealand at the same time that their children are learning how to read and write and to understand the school values. I know how a wonderful but scary experience it is, as I've been living it myself for the past 6 years. I believe I may bring into the BOT the perspective of a mother reconciling her own education experience with the education her children are having, grateful to be a part of such an inclusive community and wanting to help all and each one of the children to make the best of their time at Westburn. Thank you for your time.
I am a Christchurch local and have two children at Westburn School, a daughter in year 2 and a son in year 4. I am a Chartered Accountant and member of the Institute of Directors and I look forward to using my commercial and governance experience for the benefit of the school. In my spare time my interests include spending time with family and friends, sports, the outdoors and DIY projects.
My name is Jon Whitlow and am my wife is Rachael. We currently have 2 children at Westburn School, Jack is in year four and Carter is in year One. Our daughter Skye went to Westburn from year four to six.
We moved to Christchurch in 2009. I was relocated to Christchurch to project manage the electrical works for the expansion of the Christchurch Airport which I was on for a period of 4 years. The project ended up taking a lot longer due to the earthquakes.
March 2015, I started my own electrical business called Assist Electrical. I must say that having my own business is definitely a journey and I have learnt a lot about business and about myself in the last four years.
I have in the past thought about becoming a board member but the timing has not been right. With the new school plans developing I feel it is a great time to throw my hat in the ring.
My back ground is firstly as an electrician for 12 years and the last 10 years as Electrical Project Manager and now business owner of an electrical and automation business for the last 4 years where I have been involved in many aspects of the business including Finance, HR and business growth and development.
I feel I would bring a number of skills to the board that would contribute to the redevelopment of the school. Amongst other attributes and skills, I price and quote for many projects and problem solve and aim to work well and build relationships with colleagues of all backgrounds. These projects include new builds, renovations, retrofits and design builds for residential and commercial projects. Projects we have completed include the Art Centre, Lincoln Primary, Wigram Primary, Kaiapoi High School, Christchurch Boys High School Decant project, New Brighton Splash Pools amongst many others.
My wife and I believe the education that our children receive at Westburn is second to none. To be involved in the future of both our school design and progress of the school would be rewarding and a pleasure.
I thank you for the opportunity to put my name forward to become a board member and look forward to hearing from you.
Kind Regards, Jon
I am Shane Zheng, current Chairperson for the Westburn School board. I am standing again for the board. I have two children in the school, year 7 and year 4 respectively. Being on the board for the last 18 months has been very interesting and challenging. I am willing to bring my passion for education, experience about governance, strong leadership and focus on the student achievements back to the board. Working with the school management team, all the Westburn staff and the parent community to make sure every student in our school can get the best possible education and reach their highest potential will be my top priority if I am elected into the board again. Student and staff wellbeing will be another focus for me. It is vital for the board to encourage healthy study/work and life balance. As ERO pointed out in last year's report, Westburn school has been undertaking some significant changes in the past two years. Strong leadership from the board is necessary so that it can work effectively with the school management team to draw on our existing strengths and get even better going forward. I am ready to take this opportunity and challenge to re-join the board and help us to achieve what the community wishes for the school.
